Estate & Visit

Dakota Shy is nestled on a picturesque estate located at the base of Pritchard Hill in the heart of Napa Valley. The rich history of this property predates California’s statehood, tracing back to 1836 when George C. Yount received the Rancho Caymus land grant from General Vallejo. Throughout the 1850s, the estate served as a crucial stop on the wagon route for travelers heading north to Calistoga or taking Sage Canyon Road to the Sacramento valley.

In 2014, we acquired this historic property from its long-time owners, the de Limur family, and subsequently constructed a world-class winery. Charles de Limur, the great-grandson of the pioneering California banker and railroad executive Charles Crocker, oversaw the estate from the 1960s. He was responsible for planting the stunning redwood and magnolia trees that grace the property. Additionally, Mr. de Limur cultivated 1.2 acres of Italian and Spanish olives, from which we press our own oil. In the 1980s, the de Limurs established a Chardonnay vineyard and a small winery on the estate, which initially drew us to this enchanting location and inspired us to build Dakota Shy here. When you visit our winery, you’ll experience the perfect blend of historical significance and the legacy we are building.

We eagerly await your scheduled visit to Dakota Shy.

Vineyards

At Dakota Shy, we know that only the finest grapes can produce exceptional wines. Our ability to secure some of Napa Valley’s most iconic vineyards has been instrumental in our journey and success. Working with both historic vineyards and next-generation sites that are destined to become legendary, we are fortunate to have incredible grower-partners and access to their exceptional grapes.

We source from diverse regions across Napa Valley, including the mountainous terrains of Atlas Peak, Howell Mountain and Mount Veeder, the majestic Pritchard Hill, the Oak Knoll bench, Stag’s Leap, and the picturesque valley floor AVAs of Oakville, Rutherford, Saint Helena, and Calistoga. Each of our vineyard sites possesses unique and distinct characteristics, which winemaker Tom Garrett, skillfully harnesses to craft Cabernets that are powerful, complex and sophisticated.
