Love is in the air at Dakota Shy. This week three of our teammates celebrate their wedding anniversaries. A special congratulations to KC and Tom Garrett who set the tone at 25 years strong. Love is at the center of our winery every day, but we are especially grateful to our spouses who hold us up, who we run home to at the end of our work day and who will cherish a glass of wine with the best of them. It’s with heavy hearts that we share the passing

It’s with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our dear friend and former colleague, Payton Smith. For those who had the good fortune to meet him—whether swapping stories over glasses of Dakota Shy in the tasting room or savoring one of his incredible pizzas from our outdoor kitchen—Payton left an indelible mark. If you were lucky, you may have even managed to coax one of his coveted salad dressing recipes from him.⁠

Payton was a cornerstone of Dakota Shy, joining the team before we opened the new winery in 2017 and with us through 2023 when he left to pursue a new future with his then-fiance Lyn. His kindness, humor, and talent enriched our lives and this estate in countless ways. His care for the property and our guests will resonate far beyond his time with us.⁠

We will remember Payton in our vegetable gardens, which he championed, in the blossoms of the fruit trees he planted, and every time we fire up the pizza oven to share a meal with friends and family.⁠

Payton leaves behind his beloved wife, Lyn, and a family who shared his warmth with all of us. Our hearts are with them as we honor Payton’s life, his legacy, and the joy he brought to so many.⁠
