The region that put American wine on the map has a lot new going on. Forget mansion-size tasting rooms; there’s a crop of intimate places from small lot producers like Tom Garrett’s Dakota Shy and Favia Wines (from Screaming Eagle’s Andy Erick-son and his wife, Annie Favia). Casual dining is better than ever, with newcomers like Charter Oak, a shrine to open-fire cooking. Even Thomas Keller, fresh off renovating the French Laundry, is reportedly doing Mexican food in Yountville. And Calistoga Ranch is no longer the only place to stay in hot springs country: The five-room Francis House opened in August, and Four Seasons Resort & Residences arrives this summer.

DAKOTA SHY - Founder Todd Newman says he wanted his appointment-only St. Helena tasting room to be “a place where old souls and dreamers would share a bottle and good conversation.” The resulting space features Persian rugs, leather chairs, and a vintage typewriter so guests can type notes after sampling winemaker Tom Garrett’s stellar Cabs.

With only its second vintage, Dakota Shy bursts to the front of the pack of Napa’s Cabernet startups. Founders Todd Newman and Tom Garrett worked together at Revana Family Vineyard before launching their own winery. Garret has a steady hand with Cabernet; he’s made the wines at Detert Family Vineyards since 2000. This is a harmonious blend of mountain and valley-grown grapes. Napa Cabernet this good typical costs more. 800 cases made.

Dakota Shy is one of the most exciting young projects I have tasted in some time. Getting something new started in Napa Valley is not at all easy considering the cost of fruit, intense competition and increasingly strict regulatory environment, all of which is a testament to what Todd Newman and Tom Garrett have achieved thus far. Newman acquired his love of Napa Valley working in restaurants, including the iconic, now-closed Martini House. Newman brings passion, work ethic and humility - a pretty good mix in my book - to Dakota Shy. Newman was selling wine out of the tasting room at Revana where he met Garrett. In 2008, Newman cobbled together his savings, bought some fruit and founded Dakota Shy. Garrett's family owns the famed Detert Vineyard, which old maps show lie within the boundaries of To-Kalon. Garrett honed his craft at a number of stops, including Turley (where he met Thomas Brown), Phelps, Mondavi and Revana. Today, Garrett makes the Detert wines, which, as Vinous readers know, are terrific. General Manager Ryan Clark, whom I first met at Kelly Fleming a few years back, rounds out the team. These new releases are impressive, to say the least. The Napa Valley Cabernet is joined by bottlings from the Moulds Vineyard in Oak Knoll and the Social Currency, which is a blend of fruit from two sites in Mt. Veeder and Saint Helena. A third as yet unnamed Cabernet from a site on Howell Mountain joins the range in 2014. Stylistically, the wines are what I would describe as contemporary Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons that offer a compelling interplay of richness and structure, with perhaps a slight leaning towards the more extroverted end of the spectrum. Imagine the Detert wines with a little more kick. Readers who have a chance won't want to miss these fabulous Cabernets.

It Always Tastes Better the Longer it Takes...
The biggest publication in the world of wine deemed us a Rising Star in California Cabernet. Considering the history and the company we were fortunate enough to be included with, I’d say that we are doing what we set out to do: create world class Cabernet Sauvignon in a world class wine region, the Napa Valley. I’m proud and grateful to be able to share this with you, the ones who bought in and believed before the Wine Spectator recognized us. While we are certainly grateful for their accolades, it is you who have been with us since the early days I’m most proud to share this with.
